Notes

Aarhus Cathedral (Skt. Clemens Kirke)

Denmark’s longest church (93 m), dedicated to St Clement. The cathedral marks about 825 years in 2026 from a traditional 1201 start; the tour said it is older because cathedral school records mention the church before that date. Roughly a century to build was noted (uncertain).Steffen Published accounts: begun late 1100s under Bishop Peder Vognsen; Romanesque finish around 1300–1350; Gothic remaking c. 1449–1500.DomkirkeDanmarkshistorien

The town gate once lay at Store Torv; the church can be seen from the water.Steffen

Bishop Jens Iversen Lange raised the Gothic nave and west tower and donated the Bernt Notke altarpiece (Easter 1479). In the old days there were no chairs. At the Reformation some 36–40 side altars were suppressed; frescoes were painted over and later restored.DanmarkshistorienDomkirkeSteffen

Paintings show local elites. Burials under the floor were put at about 3,500 on the tour (approximate; careless tally).Steffen

St George and the dragon (1497 in the notes): female dragon with young — mother dead, young one living. Symbolism: you can slay the dragon (clear the problem), but the young will return later.Steffen Altar centre: Mary’s mother Anna with Mary and the Child (Notke).Domkirke

Active church; largest organ in Denmark on the cathedral’s own account (89 stops).DomkirkeSteffen Parish marriage rule; free entry, paid guided tours (voucher); toilets vs Banken nearby.Steffen

Ship Unity (1720): Dutch model / Peter the Great / Skagen wreck story — also the cathedral’s published account.DomkirkeSteffen Leprosy window (fresco c. 1300): tour said communion to lepers; cathedral text names the window without specifying what was passed.SteffenDomkirke Marselis chapel (1702): Quellinus monument; Gabriel Marselis got Crown land 1661; sons Constantin and Vilhelm; Havreballegård → Marselisborg.DomkirkeAritra

Altarpiece ~12 m; feast / Lent / Advent faces; Lange kneeling; restored 1975–81. Alle Sjæle-billedet (c. 1500): Heaven / Gregory’s Mass / Purgatory.AritraDomkirke

Vor Frue and the early town

Wooden church burned 1051 (Harald Hardrada — Louise: town holds, not taken); then travertine crypt c. 1060 (Bishop Christian; oldest vaulted stone church in the Nordic countries); then Skt. Nicolai as first cathedral; Dominicans / Blackfriars from c. 1230–1240; renamed Vor Frue after the Reformation.AarhusWikiVor FrueDanmarkshistorienSteffenLouise

Crypt rediscovered 1955, rededicated 1957 (notes said 1956/57). Crucifix is a copy of the Åby figure.Vor Frue Tour reading of the viking-style Christ: looking up, braided hair, muscular arms, big hands — how a viking hero might be shown; Kong Knud is in the notes but the link is not remembered.Steffen Six Aarhus runestones in Louise’s handout (Trap: four in the monastery foundations).LouiseTrap
