  • Crypt church (c. 1060): oldest vaulted stone church in the Nordic countries; oldest room in Aarhus. Built by Bishop Christian as a Trinity church (three aisles, three apses).
  • Built of frådsten (travertine) and fieldstone; plaster with faint mural remains.
  • Dominicans arrived mid-13th century; church transferred to them. They demolished the stone church above and began a new church with monastery. Crypt later used partly as tool/fuel store.
  • Crypt discovered under the floor during major renovation in 1955 (National Museum). Later used as church in the 1300s, then Dominicans’ fuel store, then burial place.
  • Restored with original materials; used for services, baptisms, weddings.
  • Åby crucifix in the crypt is a copy of the oldest crucifix found in Denmark. Original (c. 1050–1100) from Åby Church near Aarhus, now at Nationalmuseet. Romanesque: Christ as a strong prince/king with moustache in viking hair fashion; recalled Thor for contemporaries.

  • c. 1080: Skt. Nicolai Kirke — Aarhus’s first cathedral — built around the crypt; named for the sailors’ saint.
  • Lost cathedral status when Skt. Clemens (today’s cathedral) was built in the 1200s.
  • c. 1240: Dominicans took over Skt. Nicolai and rebuilt the travertine cathedral as a Gothic brick church. North wall oldest; partly travertine from the original cathedral (visible from the cloister court).
  • Choir c. 1250, nave c. 1350, aisle c. 1450, tower c. 1500.
  • Reformation: monks left; church renamed Vor Frue, became parish church. Christian III made the monastery a hospital for the sick and poor (into the 1930s).
  • Mid-1950s restoration; crypt rediscovered in that work.
