Excerpts filed 26 Sept 2026 from Aarhus Stadsarkiv, “Ugens Aarhushistorie: Volden og Pustervig” (2024): https://stadsarkiv.aarhus.dk/nyheder/2024/ugens-aarhushistorie-volden-og-pustervig-grubehuse-og-voldanlaeg-blev-til-udeservering-og-brostensidyl
- Volden names the former fortification around early Aros (900s, still viking-period Aarhus).
- Pustervig probably alludes to smithing (kulpustere / bellows), not a market name as such.
- Today’s Pustervig Torv is only about 110 years old; the area was built up until 1915, when clearance for the Borgporten block created the square. Some of Aarhus’s oldest finds are from here, including pit houses (grubehuse) from the 800s.
- Rampart: c. 3 m high circling the old centre — south along the stream, north at Graven, west at Volden; east along the coast poorly known archaeologically.
- Oldest stretch of Volden (south of Rosensgade) likely from the 1100s as a stone street inside the rampart; that stretch was itself called Pustervig until 1867.
- Northern Volden laid out after the ramparts were given up in the late 1400s, on top of the former bank. Name “Volden” attested in writing from 1512.
